. . . and why should I care?

Metabolic Efficiency is the body’s ability to utilize its own stores of carbohydrate and fat at different intensities and durations.  The more metabolically efficient we are, we can enhance our fat oxidation and preserve our carbohydrate stores.  Enhanced fat oxidation = more fat burning.  This can be extremely helpful for anyone who is athletic or active.  It can also help anyone with insulin resistance, diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome or even just trying to lose weight.

So, what are the main benefits from training your body to be more metabolically efficient through your nutrition?  The main benefits are:

Improved nutrition partitioning for energy use

Decreased risk of GI distress during sporting events/athletic endeavors

Improved body composition and body weight

Improved health profile

Metabolic Efficiency

Put another way, one of the goals with this concept is controlling blood glucose levels.  Why?  Well, when we eat in a manner that elevates our blood glucose levels, we get high insulin levels.  When we have high insulin levels, we inhibit fat oxidation.  We also create a roller coaster with our energy levels, food cravings, energy fluctuations, and increased risk for chronic diseases.  When we eat a balanced nutrition plan, in a more metabolically efficient manner, we can control our blood glucose levels.  When we control blood glucose levels, we can:

Reduce cravings

Eat less frequently

Lose weight

Lose body fat

Have steady energy levels

Decrease the risk of chronic diseases like insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, cancer and obesity.

What’s not to like on that list?  I think many of us can identify with wanting one or more of these health benefits.  Athletes, people with chronic diseases, people wanting to lose weight and people wanting to have steady energy levels can ALL benefit.  If you are interested in learning more about this concept, let’s talk!  You can sign up for a free 30-minute consult here.
